The Galapagos ranked second that year, rated by readers of a U.S. travel magazine with 90.6 points. In terms of city destinations in Latin America, Oaxaca ranked at the top of the list that year.

The survey was conducted among Travel + Leisure readers. Islands were rated by respondents based on natural attractions/beaches, activities/sights, restaurants/food, people/friendliness, and value. The rating scale for each characteristic was: excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. Responses were averaged to obtain the final scores.
