Nevertheless, iron ore has many uses beyond batteries. Lithium, a critical material for battery production with up to half of its consumption attributed to that purpose, had a much lower production volume that year. Global lithium production amounted to 180 thousand metric tons (excluding U.S. production) in 2023.
