The number of patents in environmental-related technologies filed via the PCT system increased rapidly over the past decades. Particularly from the 1990s and early 2000s, there was a rapid increase, from less than 7,000 in 2000 to 28,000 in 2013. The number fluctuated more after this, reaching 28,7000 patent applications in 2021.
