Methane emissions produced by cattle worldwide 1990-2021
Global methane (CH4) emissions produced from enteric fermentation in cattle were estimated at 73.5 million metric tons in 2021. Annual emissions from cattle have risen by more than 10 percent since the turn of century.
Enteric fermentation is a part of the digestive process in animals such as cattle, sheep, and buffalo. This process produces methane, which is a potent greenhouse gas with a global warming potential roughly 30 times greater than carbon dioxide. Enteric fermentation is one of the main sources of agriculture emissions.
