Global land footprint of food production 2019, by type

There are approximately 104 million square kilometers of habitable land globally, half of which is used for agricultural purposes. The roughly 51 million square kilometers of land used worldwide for agriculture is predominantly for meat and dairy livestock (including animal feed production), while 23 percent is used for crops (excluding feed). Livestock feed production requires a considerable amount of land. In 2019, the area of land used for harvesting soybeans was more than 120 million hectares. This was far larger than the land use for any other crop.
