As of 2020, there was a total of 47 universities in Tanzania, with the majority being private tertiary education institutions. There country counted 18 accredited private universities and 10 private university colleges, against 12 public universities and seven public university colleges. While the number of private universities sank from a peaking 23 institutions in 2018, the number of public universities remained the same since 2016.
