Lignite is the most heavily mined form of coal in the European Union. In the first half of 2023, the EU produced 114.7 megatons of lignite. Lignite mining is roughly four times the size of hard coal production in the EU, which reached 28.6 megatons in the same time period. Overall, coal production has decreased across the Union over the past decade.
