In the first half of 2023, the European Union produced 24 megatons of hard coal. Hard coal production has slowly decreased across the Union, with Poland the only major producer remaining. Lignite is the most common coal type currently mined across Europe. The total coal production in the EU stood at 138.7 megatons in the first half of 2023.
