Key figures on Booking.com in Russia 2021

On August 26, 2021, the Federal Antimonopoly Service of Russia fined the Dutch online travel provider Booking.com B.V., a subsidiary of the U.S. company Booking Holdings Inc., 1.3 billion Russian rubles, or approximately 17.5 million U.S. dollars, for abusing its dominant market position. The authority claimed that the aggregator obliged its partner hotels and hostels to not set prices lower than the ones on Booking.com. The global revenue of Booking Holdings Inc. reached 6.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2020.

Booking.com and the Russian eTravel market

Booking.com is the leading hotel booking platform on the Russian internet, occupying approximately 80 percent of the market revenue. In total, the online travel market size in Russia exceeded one trillion Russian rubles in 2019. Over the course of 2020, the app of Booking.com in the country was downloaded more than 2.6 million times.

Booking.com usage in Russia

Six out of ten Russians booked accommodation from Booking.com over the past year, according to Statista Global Consumer Survey conducted in 2021. Furthermore, one-fifth of respondents purchased flights through the aggregator. In March 2022, the company suspended its operations in Russia over the war in Ukraine.
