The proportion of the world's population using on-site sanitation systems and sewer connections varies greatly by region. In 2022, more than 80 percent of the populations of Europe and Northern America, and Australia and New Zealand had sewer connections. In comparison, just seven percent of the population of Sub-Saharan Africa had access to these services. On-site sanitation systems were far more common in developing regions, with 73 percent of the Central and Southern Asian population using septic tanks and improved latrines.
