Since January 1, 2016 and the implementation of the law on the new territorial organization of the republic (NOTRe), the scope of action of regional governments has been expanded in France. In addition to the responsibilities they share with the departments, they have several prerogatives, such as the management of transportation, the maintenance of high schools, land use planning, or vocational training.
It seems, according to a survey conducted shortly before the closing of polling stations during the first round of the regional elections, that these local and regional issues are a determining factor in the vote of the French. While the importance given to these issues varies somewhat depending on the size of the municipality on whose electoral list the voters are registered, three-quarters of the French said they voted on the basis of local or regional issues. The cities in which these issues had the least impact on voting were cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants.
