In 1991, the majority of believers (90 percent) in Nicaragua were Catholics and merely 5.5 percent were non-believers. However, the share of Catholics in the country has been continuously decreasing over the years, while the share of Evangelicals experienced the opposite trend. Although in 2019 Catholic believers were still the largest group with nearly 43 percent, Evangelicals reached 35.9 percent. Nondenominational believers - those who believe in God but have no religious affiliation - also reached their highest share since 1991, at 18.6 percent.
