In order to be internationally recognized, National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) must adhere to the standards of the Paris Principles, initiated by the UN General Assembly in 1993. In Africa, nearly half of the continent's 54 countries have such a mechanism in place. Large countries such as the United States, Russia, and China do not have internationally recognized NHRIs.
