An analysis published in May 2022 found that of the total 641,305 COVID-19 deaths reported in the United States between January 1, 2021 and April 30, 2022, around 318,981 could have been prevented if 100 percent of the population was vaccinated. During this period the state of West Virginia reported about 5,483 deaths related to COVID-19. It is estimated that if 100 percent of the population of West Virginia had been vaccinated then 3,350 of these deaths, or 61 percent, could have been prevented. As of May 2022, around 66 percent of the U.S. population had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
