Student athletes who play college sports in the United States are not compensated for their performance, and there is some debate over whether or not colleges should be allowed to compensate their athletes. During a survey conducted in the United States in 2021, 45 percent of respondents aged 18 to 34 stated that if colleges compensated student athletes, they strongly believed that male and female student athletes should be compensated equally for playing the same sport, regardless of how much revenue each sport generates. Meanwhile, 12 percent of respondents over 65 strongly disagreed with this statement.
