Between 2000 and 2022, the number of people in Sub-Saharan Africa that lacked basic drinking water services increased from 349 million to 408 million. This accounted for more than half of the global population without basic drinking water services in 2022. At the turn of century, the number of people in Eastern and South-Eastern Asia without basic drinking water services totaled 399.6 million. However, by 2022 this figure had fallen to 77 million. Meanwhile, just 12.6 million people in Europe and Northern America lacked these services.
