As of March 31, 2023, Japan counted approximately 31.6 million light motor vehicles (LMV), increasing from around 29.1 million ten years earlier. The most commonly known type among this Japanese vehicle class is the kei car, amounting to roughly 23.1 million vehicles.

The Road Transport Vehicle Law defines light motor vehicles (LMVs) built since October 2008 as three- or four-wheeled automobiles with an engine displacement of 660cc or smaller not exceeding 3.4m in length, 2m in height, and 1.48m in width. Older vehicles follow slightly different regulations concerning displacement and size.
