As of July 9, 2022, one-third of the adult population in Kenya was fully vaccinated against the coronavirus (COVID-19). Among Kenyan counties, Nyeri presented the most effective vaccination campaign so far, with 53.2 percent of its population aged 18 years and older having completed the vaccination series. Nairobi, the country’s capital, had a share of 51.1 percent of adults fully immunized. Considering the entire population, around 17 percent of Kenyans have been fully vaccinated against the disease.
Booster vaccination ongoing
Kenya started the COVID-19 vaccination campaign in March 2021, with doses received through the COVAX initiative. Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 330,000 people have been infected by the coronavirus in the country. Nairobi has been the most affected region: Around 40 percent of the infections were registered in the capital city, where up to now some 180,000 booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccine were administered – nearly 35 percent of the total extra doses distributed in Kenya.
Economy rebounds amid vaccination campaign
The coronavirus outbreak had a significant negative impact on Kenya's economy. In the second quarter of 2020, the country’s quarterly GDP decreased by 5.5 percent, the first contraction in recent years. Around one year later, in the third quarter of 2021, Kenya already registered improved economic performance, with the GDP growth rate measured at 9.9 percent. The education sector pushed the result, with an expansion of 65 percent. Mining and quarrying, and accommodation and food services followed, each with a 25 percent growth rate.
