According to a survey conducted in Japan in December 2020, the majority of respondents stated that they had never heard of databases listing vacant houses or vacant land, also referred to as "akiya banks" or "akichi banks." Akiya or akichi banks are often run by local governments to promote the sales of empty and abandoned houses and land. Although the increasing number of vacant dwellings, especially in rural areas of Japan, has received much attention, only 19 percent of the respondents knew akiya or akichi banks.
