Registered nurse vacancy rate in U.S. hospitals 2020-2024

In 2024, nearly half of the surveyed hospitals in the U.S. reported a registered nurse vacancy rate higher than ten percent. RN vacancy has improved drastically compared to the previous year, yet in 2020 less than a third of hospitals had an RN vacancy of over 10 percent.

While the RN vacancy rate has dropped somewhat, the time it takes to hire new staff has not, meaning hospitals will continue to face RN shortages.
