The Amazon extends for approximately 8.4 million square kilometers, across nine South American countries. Nearly two thirds of its land area is located in Brazil. Peru and Bolivia follow, with around 11 and eight percent shares of the Amazon land area, respectively.

The Pan-Amazon area is characterized by the presence of tropical rainforests, the area of influence of the Amazon River basin, and by administrative political criteria, resulting in the inclusion of non-forested areas in South America as well. It extends through 8.4 million square kilometers across nine countries.
