Cheniere Energy's Sabine Pass is the largest natural gas liquefaction plant in the world. The U.S. plant has been in service since 2016 and as of 2024, had a capacity of 28 million metric tons per year. The plant is undergoing further expansion.
The liquefaction process consists of cooling down the natural gas to a temperature of about minus 162 degrees Celsius (minus 260 Fahrenheit), thereby turning it into liquid state. The liquefied natural gas (LNG) is then transported via specifically fitted vessels to consumer markets. In 2023, the United States was the largest LNG exporting country.
