Share of first-time buyers paying stamp duty in the UK in H2 2020, by region

This statistic compares proportions of first-time buyers who payed stamp duty in the United Kingdom in June 202 when the threshold for stamp duty was property above 300,000 British pounds and in December 2020 when the threshold was raised to 500,000 British pounds. Wales had different thresholds of 180,000 and 250,000 British pounds in June and December 2020 respectively.

In London and Wales, the share of first-time buyers paying stamp duty reduced by about 50 percent from June to December 2020 while other regions registered more drastic reductions. The proportion of first-time buyers paying stamp duty in West Midlands reduced from 10 percent in June 2020 to 1.6 percent in December 2020, a reduction of over 80 percent of first-time buyers.
