In the 1970s and 1980s, the production of radios and color TVs in the United States was significantly higher than that of the Soviet Union, whereas the production of black and white TVs was generally higher in the USSR than in the U.S.. In addition to the increased production levels in the U.S., the variety and availability of media was also much greater across the United States, and TV and radio played a much larger part in entertaining and informing the population, while print media consumption was much higher in the Soviet Union.
