Between the third quarter of 2017 and the end of 2021, the number of refugee claims made by irregular border crossers in Canada decreased overall, from more than 8,500 during the third quarter of 2017 to fewer than 400 by the end of the period. The number of these requests, however, increased again since then, reaching a peak during the first quarter of 2023, with more than 14,000 refugee claims.
