Share of people working from home in Italy 2021, by educational level

The COVID-19 pandemic, which first hit Italy in late February 2020, had a massive impact on life in the country. The measures adopted by the Italian government to control the contagion pushed many businesses to stop or radically scale down their activities. According to a recent survey, around 7.3 million people were working from home as of April 2021, corresponding to 31.6 percent of the total working population in Italy. This figure, however, varied considerably according to the educational level of the employees. While for university graduates this percentage jumped to 52.2 percent, among people with at most a middle school diploma the share of individuals working from home was as low as 13.5 percent.
