The COVID-19 pandemic that first hit Italy in late February 2020 had a massive impact on life in the country. The measures adopted by the Italian government to control the contagion pushed many businesses to stop or radically readjust their activities. According to a survey conducted in April 2021, around 36.4 percent of Italian workers had to stop working for at least two weeks in the previous 12 months. Reasons related to COVID-19 containment measures explained the largest part of this percentage. According to data, the share of women who had to stop working was higher than that of men who had to do the same. Moreover, most people had to stop working for periods longer than one month.
