The term “staycation” typically refers to a holiday spent in one's home country rather than abroad, or a holiday spent at home involving day trips to local attractions. In November 2020, the states with the highest average monthly staycation searches were ranked in the United States. Arizona came in first by a considerable margin with an average of 2,400 monthly searches for the term "Arizona staycation", while Florida came in second with an average of 720 monthly searches.
Which generations in the U.S. have taken a staycation?
During an August 2020 survey, over 50 percent of respondents showed familiarity with the term ‘staycation’ in the United States. Meanwhile, only 12 percent of respondents stated that they had never heard of the term before. Despite some respondents lacking familiarity with the term, many adults in the U.S. had already taken a staycation. In 2020, the share of U.S. adults who had taken a staycation varied by generation. The generation with the highest share of respondents that had taken a staycation was Gen X, at 69 percent. Comparatively, 66 percent of Millennials and 57 percent Baby Boomers stated that this was the case.
What are the cheapest U.S. cities for a staycation?
The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic created many obstacles for international travel. Staycations, as a result, became a practical alternative for many would-be international travelers. When considering metrics such as the price of a meal, the number of hotels, and the average price of a 3-star hotel, two of the cheapest cities for a staycation in the U.S. were Omaha (Nebraska) and Houston (Texas) as of October 2020.
