Electric power sector emissions in the United States decreased by roughly seven percent in 2023, to 1.43 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide (GtCO₂). U.S. electric power sector emissions have decreased by 41 percent since 2005. The U.S. government has set an economy-wide target of cutting emissions by 50 to 52 percent below 2005 levels by 2030.

To distribute electricity emissions among economic end-use sectors, emissions from the source categories assigned to the electric power sector were allocated to the residential, commercial, industry, transportation, and agriculture economic sectors according to each economic sector’s share of retail sales of electricity.
