Electric power sector emissions in the United States decreased by roughly seven percent in 2023, to 1.43 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide (GtCO₂). U.S. electric power sector emissions have decreased by 41 percent since 2005. The U.S. government has set an economy-wide target of cutting emissions by 50 to 52 percent below 2005 levels by 2030.
