In Sub-Saharan Africa, most children in child labor were commonly found in rural areas as of 2020. They constituted a share of over 80 percent, while nearly 18 percent worked in urban areas. According to estimates, there were more than 86 million children in child labor in Africa in the same year.

According to the source, the 2020 calculations are based on the extrapolation of data from national household surveys. The new estimates use more than 100 household surveys covering two thirds of the world’s population of children aged 5 to 17 years.
