Freight rail employment by state in the U.S. 2019
In 2019, Texas was the state employing the largest number of workers in the freight rail industry. At just over 17,200 employees, it represented close to 11 percent of the total United States freight railroad workforce. It was followed by Illinois and Nebraska, which employed under 11,800 and around 10,200 people respectively.
