In Europe, the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by the fleet of newly registered cars dropped by some 12 percent between 2019 and 2020. It is estimated that this reduction was caused by a significant uptick in electric car sales in European markets in 2020. That year, the level of average carbon dioxide emissions stood at 106.7 grams per kilometer.
