In June 2021, UEFA announced that the "away goals rule" would be removed from its European competitions starting from the 2021/2022 season. During a June 2021 survey in the United Kingdom, only nine percent of soccer fans believed declaring the team that scored the most goals away from home the winner after a tied match was the fairest way to decide the outcome. In comparison, 52 percent of respondents felt that 30 minutes of extra time followed potentially by a penalty shoot-out was the fairest way to decide the outcome of a tied soccer match.
