The coal power sector in the United States produced 697 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂) in 2023, representing an overall decrease of 65 percent from 2005 levels. By comparison, emissions from natural gas power more than doubled during this same period. These variations are due to the shift away from coal-fired power toward gas-fired power. This transition, along with the increased uptake of renewables, has seen U.S. electric power sector CO₂ emissions fall more than 40 percent since 2005.
