According to the European innovation scoreboard, which measures innovation in Europe according to a variety of different indicators, Denmark had the highest score when it came to 'environmental sustainability' a category which measures how countries are reducing the negative impact on the environment from the use of natural resources, from air pollution, and how they much they have developed environment-related technologies.

The European innovation scoreboard provides a comparative analysis of innovation performance in EU countries, other European countries, and regional neighbours. It assesses the relative strengths and weaknesses of national innovation systems and helps countries identify areas they need to address.
"Environmental sustainability captures improvements to reducing the negative impact on the environment including three indicators: Resource productivity, Exposure to Air pollution by fine particulates PM2.5, and the Development of environment-related technologies.."
The EIS 2021 distinguish between four main types of activities, and 12 innovation dimensions, capturing in total 32 indicators."
