During a survey conducted in May 2021 in the United States, a majority of respondents, 53 percent, stated that they thought it was appropriate for Olympic athletes to use their platform to speak out against perceived human rights issues in their own nation. Meanwhile, 28 percent of respondents thought it was not appropriate for Olympic athletes to speak out against perceived human rights issues.
