The Summer Olympics were scheduled to be held in Tokyo, Japan in 2020, but the event was postponed to 2021 due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Many other sporting events were also cancelled that year or played behind closed doors, while others were played with just a fraction of the usual attendance. Similarly, for the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, international fans will not be allowed to attend in person, including families of athletes.
During a survey conducted in May 2021 in the United States, a majority of respondents, 48 percent, stated that they did not agree with Japan's decision to bar the families of athletes from attending the games, while 33 percent of respondents agreed with the ban.
