In 2022, the brand value of online food delivery brand Deliveroo stood at 1.4 billion British pounds, down from an estimated 2.2 billion in the previous financial year. TIn spite of the decrease, Deliveroo was one of the fastest-growing brand in the United Kingdom.
Deliveroo: a UK start-up success story
Deliveroo is an online food delivery service owned by Roofoods Limited and headquartered in London. The company was founded in 2013 by Will Shu and Greg Orlowski, who wanted to expand the local food delivery scene. Fast forward to today, Deliveroo operates in over 12 countries and ranks among the leading unicorns in Europe with a market evaluation of seven billion U.S. dollars. The service has established an extensive network of restaurant partners - many of whom did not previously offer delivery options themselves - and employs thousands of riders in the UK and abroad.
Online food delivery boom
The pandemic rapidly disrupted the global hospitality industry. As many restaurants had to rely on takeaway and delivery options for survival, the online food delivery market saw an unprecedented boom in 2020. Partnerships with companies such as Deliveroo or Uber Eats became especially vital for small restaurants and eateries unequipped to carry out orders themselves. While guests have since returned to restaurants, online delivery apps are still thriving as consumers value the convenience of having their favorite meals delivered right to their doorstep. Reacting to the changes in consumer demand and (online) shopping behavior, Deliveroo and other big players such as Amazon have also introduced on-demand grocery services for people looking to buy last-minute ingredients and beverages.
