According to a survey conducted on consumer perceptions and purchases in India during 2018, majority of the respondents stated that the air conditioners they purchased had three star ratings. Whereas, only about 14 percent of the household respondents stated that they purchased four star or higher rated air conditioners in that time period.

A star rating system depicts the energy efficiency of an electrical appliance. The higher the number of stars, the more efficient it is. The star rating system was devised by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) India, with a range of one to five stars.
