At the end of financial year 2023, a total of just over 33 thousand cafés and restaurants in operation in Australia had an annual turnover of between 200 thousand and two million Australian dollars. This figure represents a majority of the roughly 54.28 thousand cafés and restaurants in operation throughout the country. A much smaller number of cafés and restaurants had annual turnover greater than two million Australian dollars.

Recent years have seen a rise in the number of cafés and restaurants throughout the country. Before the COVID-19 pandemic severely affected Australia’s economy, the annual turnover of cafés, restaurants, and takeaway food service increased every year for more than a decade.

Gastronomy: value added for the tourism industry

Food services make a significant contribution to the gross value added of the tourism industry in Australia. While the COVID-19 pandemic certainly hit the industry hard, there was annual GDP growth in the tourism sector for several years. Nonetheless, the number of international visitor arrivals to Australia may still need some time to recover to pre-pandemic levels.
