On November 9th 2020, German biotech company BioNTech in cooperation with U.S. pharma giant Pfizer were the first to announce a proven COVID-19 vaccine to be ready for mass production by year-end. In 2023, total R&D expenses stood at some 1.78 billion U.S. dollars, an increase from around 1.53 billion dollars in 2022.
