Public support for Naomi Osaka not speaking to media in the U.S. 2021
Shortly before the French Open in 2021, tennis star Naomi Osaka announced that she would not attend her mandatory media duties before and after matches. After not holding a press conference following her first victory, she was fined 15 thousand U.S. dollars. The next day, Osaka withdrew from the tournament, citing mental health issues. In a June 2021 survey in the United States, 46 percent of sports fans strongly agreed with Osaka's decision not to speak to the media, while only 5 percent strongly opposed her stance.
