As of March 2024, AIS had the fastest 5G connection speed in Thailand, with an average download speed of 133.5 Mbps. In contrast, DTAC's average download speed was 49.3 Mbps. 5G networks are the fifth generation of broadband cellular networks, offering faster connection speeds than 4G networks.
The three major 5G providers in Thailand
AIS, TrueMove, and DTAC are the leading companies providing 5G networks in the country. As of March 2024, AIS had the fastest 5G upload speed and also provided the best 5G availability in Thailand. Mobile phones had the highest share of web traffic in the country, with a growing number of users of social media, instant messengers, and e-commerce platforms. Such platforms and networks benefit from a stable 5G network in several ways, like faster downloads and smoother video streaming or faster response times for transactions.
Consumer experience
Thanks to the newly introduced 5G technology, smart devices like wearables have increased in popularity. In 2022, more than 30 percent of the population owned a smartwatch in Thailand. The main motivation for adopting wearables is health concerns, with many consumers hoping to monitor and improve their health by using such smart devices. The availability of the 5G network has also created the foundation for telemedicine, remote patient monitoring, and advanced fitness coaching. While there are a lot of companies offering smartwatches, Apple is the leading brand when it comes to ownership of wearable technology in Thailand.
