Most interceptions and rescues of migrants in the Libyan Search and Rescue Region (SRR) were made by the Libyan authorities in the first quarter of 2021. On the other hand, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) were responsible for only 20 percent of the total rescues and interceptions in the area. The Libyan SRR covers the part of the Mediterranean Sea close to the Libyan coasts. The interception of migrants by the Libyan authorities is cause for concern, particularly because migrants who are returned to Libya are often taken into detention.
