As of 2020, slightly over 41 percent of the respondent firms in Egypt indicated to have paid a bribe to get a construction permit. This was higher than both the share for businesses in the Middle East and North Africa and the world average, which were set at 28.2 percent and 21.4 percent, respectively. Moreover, the proportion of businesses indicating that they need to gift officials was low in all other criteria, with five percent of them reporting expectations to gift public officials in order to get things done. Overall, corruption ranked third in the business environment obstacles ranking for firms.
