Discharges from European hospitals following a disease of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue varied greatly per country. In 2021, with 2,403 discharges per 100 thousand inhabitants, Austria had the highest number of discharges after a musculoskeletal system disease. On the other hand, Malta had the lowest number of discharges, with less than 300 per 100 thousand inhabitants. A discharge occurs whenever a patient leaves because of finalization of treatment, signs out against medical advice, transfers to another health care institution, or on death.
