With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in the year 2020, news viewership across India saw a spike during the lockdown period, with the genre accounting for almost 15 percent of the country's overall television viewership. However, by the end of the year news viewership dropped to slightly less than pre-COVID levels. India underwent nationwide lockdowns in multiple phases between mid-March and July 2020.
