The number of phone lines across Western Europe rose from approximately 247 lines per thousand people in 1920, to 899 lines per thousand people in 1949. By comparison, the number of lines across select countries in Eastern and Southern Europe increased from just 12 to 79 lines per thousand people over the same time period.
