In a survey conducted in December 2020, less than six percent of Japanese respondents were familiar with the terms "asexual" or "aromantic" and what they describe, while a majority of over 81 percent had never encountered those terms before. The terms "asexual" and "aromantic" are part of the initialism LGBTQ+. "Asexual" describes people who feel either a very low level or complete lack of sexual attraction and/or desire for sexual activities, while "aromantic" refers to people who may enjoy sex despite not feeling romantic attraction to others.
The acronym LGBTQ+, often just LGBT, is an umbrella term describing members of sexual minorities. The individual letters stand for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning, with the "+" including an additional and larger spectrum of sexual identities and gender identities. The terms "asexual" and "aromantic", alongside "agender", are also represented by the letter "A" in the expanded initialism LGBTQIA+.
