A survey conducted in India in 2020, reported that 18 percent of households whose food intake had reduced during the pandemic and made no recovery had to take a loan and and sell their assets. Among the households without assets and whose food intake did not recover, almost 10 percent were obliged to take a loan. Thus, the figures signified an inverse relationship between food intake recovery and the likelihood of borrowing or selling among Indian households since the lockdown.
Share of households who look a loan or sold assets during the COVID-19 pandemic in India as at December 2020, by food intake recovery status
Note: The survey was conducted in two rounds. The first round conducted between April 13, 2020 and May 23, 2020 involved 4,942 respondents being interviewed. In the second round of the survey 2,778 of these respondents were re-interviewed between October 7, 2020 and December 23, 2020. The data was captured for three different time points - pre-lockdown (February 2020), lockdown (April and May 2020), and post lockdown (September, October and November 2020).
Food intake recovery refers to the trajectory followed by the food consumption levels of households before, during and after the lockdown in India. The data shows the share of households that had to take a loan and/or sell an asset for each food recovery status.
